An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure – universal health coverage to strengthen health security

The targets described under Sustainable Development Goal 3 (SDG3) aim to ensure that countries achieve universal health coverage (UHC) and that capacities to identify early warnings, implement risk reduction plans and to respond and manage national and global health risks including emerging infectious diseases outbreaks is strengthened.

In this article, members of the APLMA secretariat team and colleagues explore the context of SDG3 in the Asia Pacific region and how funding the elimination of infectious diseases – specifically malaria – can facilitate strengthening of weak health systems.

Funding for the achievement of these outcomes can be erratic and weak health care systems do not cope well with the vagaries of fluctuating economies. UHC is bolstered by formulated social health insurance programs that ensure consistent and predictable financial flows.
