The 8th Asia Pacific Leaders' Summit on Malaria Elimination, held in Papua New Guinea, brought together over 160 participants, including government officials, health professionals, and international representatives. The event focused on investing in malaria elimination, with key outcomes including the signing of the EDEN Initiative and commitments from regional leaders. The Summit highlighted the importance of innovative financing, regional collaboration, and integrated strategies to achieve a malaria-free Asia Pacific by 2030. The Summit was chaired by Hon Dr Lino Tom, MP, Minister for Health, Papua New Guinea with the theme “Invest to Achieve Zero Malaria” and united stakeholders to address the significant burden and impact of malaria among Pacific Island nations, as well as the need for health system investment, regional collaboration, and innovative solutions.

In the Asia Pacific region, malaria and Lymphatic Filariasis (LF) exhibit comparable transmission patterns and overlap geographically. Integrating the responses to tackle these two diseases holds significant promise, as both diseases can potentially be effectively managed using the same vector-targeted interventions.

On June 6, 2024, Health Ministers from Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Timor-Leste, and Vanuatu launched the EDEN Initiative at the 8th Asia Pacific Leaders' Summit on Malaria Elimination. The initiative aims to combat malaria and other vector-borne diseases through regional partnerships. Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands face rising malaria cases, while Vanuatu's progress is threatened by various challenges. The EDEN Initiative will enhance regional support, capacity building, and financing to address these issues effectively.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has certified Cabo Verde as a malaria-free country, marking a significant achievement in global health. With this announcement, Cabo Verde joins the ranks of 43 countries and 1 territory that WHO has awarded this certification.

March 8 is International Women’s Day, and this year UN Women called on leaders to unite under the theme ‘Invest in women: Accelerate progress.

With decades of progress in reducing malaria cases and deaths, the Asia Pacific region is now poised to accelerate its efforts towards malaria elimination using a science-based approach.

Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea – Health Minister Dr. Lino Tom announced on Wednesday the Government of Papua New Guinea's collaborative effort with the Asia Pacific Leaders Malaria Alliance (APLMA) to co-host the Asia Pacific Leaders' Summit on Malaria Elimination. The summit is scheduled for June 6-7, 2024, in Port Moresby.

Malaria has long been a major public health concern in the Asia Pacific region, particularly in South East Asia (SEA) affecting millions of people. While Asia Pacific has been very successful in drastically reducing the malaria burden, over the past 10 years only three countries in the region successfully earned their malaria-free status: Maldives in 2015, Sri Lanka in 2016, and China in 2021. China's eradication of malaria in particular was a momentous feat, making it a potential blueprint for other countries in the region. Let's examine the lessons we can learn from China's malaria elimination strategy.

With a 64% reduction in malaria cases since 2010, Asia Pacific has made impressive progress towards malaria elimination. Much of this success is due to regular and ongoing efforts to survey, test, treat, and monitor malaria cases. As a communicable disease, malaria is apt to resurge if these efforts lose momentum. This is a concern for countries that have nearly eliminated the disease and even for countries like Sri Lanka and China which have been declared malaria-free.
